Rusty nail experiment - materials needed

one Rusty nail experiment - Nails in 6 different treatments

Set up the vi test tubes or cups as shown in the picture higher up. This experiment is very much about variable testing!

2 Rusty nail experiment - different screws & nail to test

Take a photo and write downwards your observations of each boom at the commencement of the experiment. This is also a skilful fourth dimension to enter this into your ain classroom web log!

Optional: Counterbalance each nail with an accurate scale at the start and the finish of the experiment.

Optional: Try different nails in the same liquid… do they rust differently?

3 Rusty nail experiment - making observations

Over the coming days have recording of each nail'southward condition.

– Which nail showed rust starting time?
– If you were able to weigh each smash at the end of the experiment, was there any departure between the nails? Why?

four Rusty nail experiment - nail in vinegar on day 1

This setup is simply one way of running this classic rust experiment. You could too endeavor the follwing experiment conditions as well:

– smash completely submerged in h2o vs. half submerged.
– smash completely submerged in water with a layer of oil over the top of it.
– nail in common salt h2o vs. nail in pure table salt

v Rust formed on the nail in vinegar

You could too endeavour normal steel nails vs. steel wool to investigate the event of expanse on rusting rates likewise.

Why Does This Happen?

Rusting is the oxidation of metal, whereby the oxygen in the environment combines with the metal to form a new compound chosen a metallic oxide. In the case of iron rusting, the new chemical compound is called iron oxide… also known as rust!

This science experiment is all about controlling variables to explore which material volition rust an iron nail first.

Variables to exam

More than on variables here

  • Try humid the water… does this make the smash rust faster, slower or is in that location no impact on the rusting fourth dimension?
  • What happens when y'all use different liquids?
  • If y'all scratch the nail outset, will it rust faster or slower?
  • What if you lot use iron wool and iron filings instead?
  • Endeavour galvanised nails
